Answers to the questions families ask

Ages, sections, bilingualism, hours, fees and visits: everything you need to know to decide whether Honeycomb is the right place for your child’s first years.

The school

What is Honeycomb School?

Honeycomb School is a bilingual Italian-English early years centre for children aged 0 to 6 in Muzzano, near Lugano. It includes a nursery (0–3 years), a kindergarten (3–6 years) and after-school care.

Where is Honeycomb?

At Via Alla Selva 5, 6933 Muzzano, in the Lugano area (Canton Ticino, Switzerland). Open the location in Google Maps.

What pedagogical approach do you follow?

We draw on several educational models, from outdoor education to Montessori and Reggio-inspired practice, without adhering dogmatically to a single label. The common thread is a cared-for environment, respectful rhythms, essential materials and genuine attention to the relationship between adult and child.

Who works with the children?

Educators, teachers and pedagogical coordination, supported by a team of early years specialists: a neuro-psychomotor therapist, a speech therapist, sleep and bilingualism consultants and external pedagogical supervision. Specialists are not present every day: they observe, meet parents and run themed sessions.

Ages and sections

From what age do you accept children?

From the first months of life up to age 6. The nursery has three groups: Little Bees (0–12 months), with a dedicated space for babies, Happy Bees (12–24 months) and Busy Bees (24–36 months). From 3 to 6 children attend the kindergarten as the Bumble Bees.

How does settling in at the nursery work?

Settling in is gradual and respects the pace of each child and family. It starts with a welcome meeting with the pedagogical coordinator and includes a structured conversation about sleep, feeding and separation.

Does the kindergarten prepare children for primary school?

Yes, without anticipating it: we work on spoken language and listening, fine and gross motor skills, curiosity and emotional security. Children can then continue in a public, bilingual or international primary school.

Is after-school care open to children from other schools?

Yes. After-school care offers afternoons after school hours, holiday modules and summer camps in small groups, and it is also open to children who attend other schools.

Bilingualism

How does bilingualism work at Honeycomb?

Each educator speaks only their mother tongue, Italian or English, and every section has native speakers of both languages. Children experience the two languages in everyday routines (play, care, meals, rest) rather than studying them as a subject.

Can two languages confuse a young child?

Linking each language to a person helps children recognise and separate them. For each age group we use recurring language routines (songs, rhymes, voice games), and the model has been designed with language development specialists. Read our article on raising bilingual children.

We do not speak English at home: is that a problem?

We offer sessions for parents on how to manage languages at home, valuing the linguistic reality of every family. We are happy to talk about it during your visit.

Hours, fees and enrolment

What are the opening hours?

We are open Monday to Friday from 07:30 to 18:30. At the nursery you can choose long full day (07:30–18:30), full day (07:30–17:30), short day (07:30–16:00) or half day (07:30–12:30 or 12:30–18:30), 4 or 5 days a week. The kindergarten follows the cantonal calendar from September to June, 08:30–15:30 or long full day 07:30–18:30.

How much does Honeycomb cost?

Annual nursery fees range from CHF 13,596 to CHF 24,500 depending on hours and days; the kindergarten costs CHF 23,000 (08:30–15:30) or CHF 25,500 (07:30–18:30) per year. Meals are extra. See all fees.

What fees are due at enrolment?

A one-off enrolment fee of CHF 3,000 and an annual admission fee of CHF 1,500 for each year of attendance, which secures the place.

Are meals included?

No. Meals cost CHF 2,400 per year (5-day nursery and kindergarten) or CHF 1,920 per year for the 4-day nursery.
